Kitchen Renovation

Your kitchen should be functional and stylish. It is the heart of the home and our growing families use the mess out of this space every day.

As is, the space is feeling dim, crowded and honestly the angled island layout had me questioning your builder’s choices. As I reconfigured your island and styled the room I kept in mind your desire for more space to sit as a family. Here are my recommendations for a full remodel of your kitchen and breakfast nook:

Kitchen:

  • Cabinet boxes to the ceiling

  • Build vent hood in lieu of a microwave

  • Repaint all upper and lower perimeter cabinets to Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige

  • New quartz kitchen countertops - I would opt for white quartz with warm gold/brown veining

  • Vertical shiplap as the backsplash behind all the countertop spaces

  • Accent tiled backsplash behind slide in range - some sort of patterned marble mosaic (harlequin, checkered, arabesque)

  • New single bowl kitchen sink - opt for a quartz composite in lieu of stainless steel (I got one last year and it is a game changer!)

  • Gold Hardware - kitchen faucet, cabinet pulls

  • Window trim - this will transform the windows from feeling awkward and annoying to intentional and decorative

  • Curtains on those big beautiful windows

Island:

  • Total demolition and rebuild a brand new 3’x5’ island (see my drawings for an idea)

  • Straighten out the angle

  • Stained oak or maple wood cabinets - a medium-toned, warm brown

  • Match perimeter countertops

  • 10” overhang to allow for bar stools

  • 18” trash drawer - let’s hide that thing!

  • 30” microwave opening

  • Drawers anywhere else we can get them

  • Replace linear light fixture with two pendants

Breakfast Nook:

  • Build window seating that wraps towards the pantry and provides storage

  • Window trim

  • Curtains

  • Replace light fixture with a linear one to match the hardware in the rest of the kitchen

All the colors and finish preferences can be tweaked to your preferred style when you actually go to make those selections. My hope is that the suggestions I’ve outlined will make it 100x easier when you do decide to pull the trigger on your renovation. I was keeping in mind your budget as best as I could with my estimated pricing for the trades and material you would need to involve. When you start the process you can determine whether any of the below cost-saving ideas would be worth it to you guys.

  • Forgo the cabinet boxes to the ceiling

  • This step will likely cost upwards of $6,000 for the labor and ordering the cabinet faces

  • DIY - a lot of the ideas are able to be done yourselves

    • The paneling

    • Window trim

    • Fixture installations (faucet, lighting, cabinet hardware)

    • Bench seating

    • Thrift fixtures from Facebook Marketplace
